Dear Mentors, It is recommended that you have taken some form of safety training and know first aid. It is also recommended that you are experienced in the new diver’s area of interest in freediving, or that you refer them to another mentor that is, to help insure the success of the program. The goal of the mentorship program is to provide new freedivers with an experienced and safe buddy. A mentor is someone who can “show them the ropes”, answer their questions and help them with things like gear selection, which pools to train at, places to dive ect. This is a free and much appreciated service provided on the mentor’s own personal time. The Vancouver Apneist Club Mentorship Programs purpose is to introduce new divers to freediving in a safe and comfortable environment. This is not a teaching program but it is an informational buddy program. This buddy program will help a beginner develop the basic skills and safety needed for freediving before taking a course or a clinic. The club will provide experienced mentors who are knowledgeable in different areas of freediving (i.e. recreation, competition); these mentors will buddy up with the new divers as they begin their freediving pursuits. New divers are generally full of questions and some will have more specific interests than others. For those who are more interested in recreational freediving we hope to pair them with a mentor who can show them some of the lower mainland’s great local dive sites and can introduce them to the safety and buddy system that goes along with open water diving. For those who are more interested in competition we hope to pair them with a mentor who is knowledgeable on the safety and rules of competition and have experienced one. For new divers who are interested in all aspects they may end up diving with one or more mentor to get a full understanding of the sport. However it is recommended that if the new diver starts to surpass the mentor’s own abilities that they are paired with a more suitable mentor for safety purposes. For more information or to sign up to become a mentor you can contact the board through email at board@vancouverapneist.com Thank-you for your interest in this new and exciting program! |
