2017 Mayne Island Eelgrass Survey

On the weekend of June 3-4, members of the Vancouver Apneist Freediving Club participated in the 9th annual eelgrass survey on Mayne Island. This was our fourth in Miners Bay, part of a three year rotation with two other bays on the island.

These surveys are organized by the Mayne Island Conservancy and are used to monitor the size and health of the eelgrass beds. Eelgrass is important habitat for a variety of marine life ...

January 2017 Update

It has been a long time since the Vancouver Apneist site has seen an update but worry not! We are still active as a club; we just haven't been keeping the website up to date. Part of that was due to the fact that the site became difficult to maintain. We've given it a rebuild now and a fresh coat of paint so hopefully you will see more life here.

Two other excuses ...

Dive Report: Lingcod Egg Mass Survey Dive #2

The Vancouver Aquarium Lingcod Egg Mass Survey is over for another year, but on March 4 Tom, Paul and I went out for one last look for eggs. Paul's car co-operated and he made the long car-ferry-bus-train-carpool trip to Porteau. If all club members put as much effort into making a dive happen as our members on the island we could probably charter a boat once a month. In any case it's great ...

Dive Report: Lingcod Egg Mass Survey Dive #1

This past weekend, Murat, Greg, David Denz and myself got in the water for a little cold water snorkeling in the form of a Lingcod egg mass survey dive at Porteau. Paul Lescarmure was slated to join us, but car trouble meant he was unable to catch the early ferry required to make it over to us in time.

We were treated to a beautiful winter dive day. Air temps were up near 10 degrees ...

Bennett Bay, Mayne Island Eelgrass Survey

Our first eelgrass survey on Mayne Island was a big success. We had a full crew, the weather and hospitality were fabulous and we accomplished all of our primary and secondary objectives for the weekend.

Our dive team consisted of Tom Lightfoot, Greg Fee, Peter Pazdera, Mark Comeau, Annette Spreeuw, Jill Yoneda and Andrew Hogan. We were joined by some local kayakers, including Leanna Boyer, the project leader from the Mayne Island Conservancy Society. Both ...
